Haskell Institute, on the southern edge of Lawrence, Kansas, was in 1908 a federal boarding school for Native American students drawn from many tribes. Founded in 1884 and named for the Kansas politician Dudley Chase Haskell, it paired academic lessons with vocational training, so students spent part of each day in shops, fields, and household work meant to prepare them for wage labor and farming. Lawrence was otherwise known for the state university on Mount Oread and its modest manufacturing base, but the school was one of the town's most conspicuous institutions. Families often regarded it with mixed feelings, since attendance was tied to federal assimilation policies that could keep children away from home for years.
