In 1913, Lawrence, Kansas, was a railroad town on the Kansas River, served by the Santa Fe and Union Pacific lines, with the University of Kansas on Mount Oread above it. At the southern edge of town, Haskell Institute was a large campus of brick and frame buildings, and its athletic teams had begun drawing regional attention and crowds to games in the years before the First World War. Students from many tribes were a familiar sight in town, and the school's sports and public events gave local residents a shared stake in its reputation. The campus was also a reminder of how far federal Indian education policy reached into Kansas communities.
