In 1913, the University of Kansas at Lawrence was still built largely on the crest of Mount Oread, where the older stone halls stood beside newer brick buildings and the Spooner Library. Students reached the hill from the town's Massachusetts Street and from the depots along the Kansas River, where Union Pacific and Santa Fe trains brought in young people from across the state. Lawrence depended on the university for much of its trade, and boarding houses, bookshops, and small stores on the lower slopes served a student body that was growing each year. Kansas had been dry by constitutional amendment since 1880, so campus social life centered on literary societies, athletics, and student publications rather than saloons. For townspeople and students alike, the view from the hilltop was the most familiar picture of the city.
