The State University of Kansas occupied the hill of Mount Oread above Lawrence in 1908, when this view of its buildings was made. The school had opened in 1866 and served as the state's main public university, drawing students from farm towns and railroad communities across Kansas. Lawrence sat on the Kansas River, where rail lines carried wheat, corn, and livestock out of the state. Under Chancellor Frank Strong, the university was expanding its library and laboratories, and students took pride in football and the rivalry with the Kansas State Agricultural College in Manhattan. For Lawrence residents, the hilltop campus was the most visible landmark in town.
