Wichita, Kansas, in 1912 was a fast-growing city of roughly 60,000 people, built on the oil boom that had swept south-central Kansas after the discovery of the Augusta field and on the grain and cattle trade that moved through its rail yards. Several lines, including the Santa Fe and the Missouri Pacific, made Wichita a shipping center for wheat and livestock, and its meatpacking and flour milling plants employed large numbers of workers. The city had only recently gone through its own oil-driven expansion, and its downtown was filling with new office blocks and commercial buildings. Local residents were increasingly known for aviation, a reputation that would take firm shape in the years just after this panorama was taken.
