State University in 1913 meant the University of Kansas on Mount Oread above Lawrence, the state's oldest public university, chartered in 1865 when Kansas was still new to statehood. Lawrence was a small river city whose economy rested on trade, local services, and the students and faculty who filled its streets. Most students then came from Kansas farm and small-town families, and campus life centered on literary societies, fraternities, and athletic contests that drew townspeople up the hill. Chancellor Frank Strong, who led the university from 1902 to 1920, oversaw its growth during the Progressive era, when the state's public institutions were expanding and gaining wider influence.
