State University, Lawrence, Kansas, in 1908 was the University of Kansas, which had opened in 1866 on Mount Oread above the town. The campus was still compact, with its main academic halls clustered on the hilltop and the town's streets and rail lines spread out below. Lawrence had been scarred by the 1863 Quantrill raid, when much of the town was burned, and by 1908 it had long since recovered into a settled college and railroad town. Under Chancellor Francis H. Snow's successor, Frank Strong, who led the university from 1902 to 1920, the school was expanding its enrollment and its range of departments. Students and townspeople alike would have known the hill as the place where the university's growth and the city's life were closely tied together.
