Winfield, Kansas, in 1910 was the county seat of Cowley County, a wheat and cattle district in the south-central part of the state where the Walnut and Arkansas rivers meet. Railroads shaped its economy, since the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe line brought grain, livestock, and shipments in and out, and flour milling and grain trade gave local men steady work. Southwestern College, a Methodist school founded in the 1880s, gave the town a campus and a reputation for education beyond the surrounding farms. Residents also took pride in their courthouse square, their churches, and the civic clubs that organized Fourth of July celebrations and other public gatherings. A photograph of the town from this period shows a community still growing on the strength of the prairie harvest and the rail lines that carried it to market.
