Winfield, the seat of Cowley County in south-central Kansas, was a market town of wheat farms and grain elevators in 1910, shaped by the railroads that reached it in the 1870s and 1880s. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe line helped make it a shipping point for the surrounding wheat and livestock, and the town's mills and business blocks served farm families from across the county. Winfield was also a college town, home to Southwestern College, a Methodist school, which gave its streets a steady flow of students alongside merchants and farmers. Residents of 1910 knew the town as a county center where courthouse business, church life, and the annual fair drew people in from the countryside, and a street like Ninth Avenue would have carried wagons, streetcar-era foot traffic, and the bustle of Saturday trade.
