This 1919 view shows the army hospital at Camp Funston, the wartime cantonment on the Fort Riley reservation near Junction City, Kansas. The camp was built in 1917 to train National Army draftees for the First World War and grew into one of the largest training sites in the country. Its wards were overwhelmed during the influenza outbreak of spring 1918, an epidemic that many historians count as an early and severe phase of the worldwide pandemic. By 1919 the armistice had ended the training mission, and demobilization was emptying the barracks, so the hospital cared for a shrinking garrison and returning men. Junction City, a railroad town on the Kansas River, depended heavily on the post's payroll and trade.
