Houston in April 1913 was a city of roughly 90,000 people, anchored by cotton, lumber, and the Houston Ship Channel, which had opened to deep-draft traffic in 1914 after years of dredging and was then nearing completion. The city had been a rail hub since the 1850s, with several lines converging downtown, and its merchants shipped cotton and rice through the Gulf port. Oil was not yet the dominant force it would become after the Spindletop boom of 1901 pushed production upward across the state. Downtown streets, the courthouse, and the commercial blocks shown in this 1913 panorama reflected a city that saw itself as the commercial center of the Gulf Coast, and its residents followed streetcar lines and rail schedules closely.
