Texas City, on the north shore of Galveston Bay, is the setting for this 1913 view of three engineer companies lined up in formation. The town had grown up around the Santa Fe railroad and its shipping piers, and it shipped grain, cotton, and other goods out through its harbor. In 1913, Texas was still rebuilding and modernizing after the 1900 Galveston hurricane, which had made Gulf Coast ports and their rail links a matter of public concern. Across the state, militia and military units were drilling as the Mexican Revolution unsettled the Rio Grande border, and organized units like these were a visible part of civic life. The photograph records a moment when Texas City was a working port town whose residents took pride in its trains, docks, and disciplined local companies.
