This tall, narrow lithograph advertises a production of *The Duchess of Devonshire*, a historical drama staged under the Sweely Shipman & Co. name. The title refers to Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire (1757–1806), a leading figure of late eighteenth-century English society whose fashions and political influence made her famous. The poster was printed in 1906 by the U.S. Lithograph Co. and Russell-Morgan Print of Cincinnati and New York, companies that produced large numbers of colorful theater advertisements at the time. Its emphasis on period costume reflects how theatrical publicity in the early twentieth century often promoted historical dress as a main attraction.
