University of Nanking, in Nanjing, China, was in 1920 one of the leading Christian colleges in the country, founded in 1888 by a group of American Protestant missionary boards and later joined by others. The campus on the southern edge of the old imperial capital drew students from across China, and its agricultural and medical work tied it closely to the surrounding region at a time of political upheaval after the 1911 revolution. Nanjing itself was a major river city on the Yangtze, with trade moving through its port and a growing number of schools and mission institutions. A panoramic view of the campus would have shown the college to visitors and supporters abroad as a symbol of Western-style higher education taking root in China.
