In 1908, the University of Wyoming stood on the open prairie at the edge of Laramie, a railroad town that grew up when the Union Pacific pushed its line across the high plains in the late 1860s. The university had opened in 1887, three years before Wyoming became a state in 1890, and it operated as a land-grant school with a focus on agriculture, engineering, and teacher training. Laramie's economy rested on the railroad, freight, and the cattle and sheep country that stretched out beyond town, so many students likely came from ranching families and small communities across the territory. Around this time the campus was still compact and only partly built up, and the railroad and the surrounding range shaped daily life for the people who lived and studied there.
