Laramie, Wyoming, in 1908 was a railroad town that had grown up around the Union Pacific line, which reached the site in 1868 and made it a division point for trains crossing the high plains. The town also served the surrounding cattle and sheep ranches, and wool and livestock moved through its depots toward eastern markets. The University of Wyoming, chartered in 1886, gave the community a student population alongside its railroad workers and ranch families. A street scene from that year would have shown brick storefronts, wagons, and rail men on the town's main thoroughfares, and residents knew their city as the crossroads of the Union Pacific and the state's young university.
