Sheridan, Wyoming, in 1909 was a young cattle and coal town on the eastern slope of the Bighorn Mountains, about 25 years after its founding in 1882 and roughly two decades after Wyoming became a state. Ranching, cattle and sheep, and the nearby coal fields drove its economy, and the arrival of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy line in 1892 linked local stockmen and miners to eastern markets. As the Sheridan County seat, the town was the center of local courts, county government, and merchant business for surrounding ranches. Residents in 1909 would have known it as a gateway to the Bighorns and as a stopping point for hunters, tourists, and freight haulers headed into the mountains.
