Powell, Wyoming, in 1916 was a young farming town in the Big Horn Basin, settled only within the past several years as part of the federal Shoshone Irrigation Project. Its economy rested on sugar beets, grain, alfalfa, and cattle, and canals and the railroad brought in settlers and supplies. That spring, Pancho Villa's raid on Columbus, New Mexico, sent National Guard units across the country toward the Mexican border, and Wyoming's guard was called into federal service, so a local company like this one stood for both town pride and family worry. The men of Company C, pictured here, would have been recognized by neighbors who knew them from church, school, and the farm fields they were now leaving.
