Grass Creek, in Hot Springs County in north-central Wyoming, was an oil camp in April 1916, when the field was still new and the state's petroleum industry was growing fast. Wyoming had produced oil since the late 1800s, mostly from older fields such as Salt Creek near Casper, and in the years before the United States entered the First World War, demand for fuel and lubricants was rising across the country. Drilling crews, teamsters, and supply haulers made up much of the workforce on these remote sites, and most camps depended on wagon roads and the rail lines that served the broader region. Local residents in the surrounding ranching country would have known such fields as a sign that the economy was shifting from cattle and sheep toward mineral wealth.
