Thermopolis, Wyoming, in 1914 was a small town on the Big Horn River whose growth rested on its mineral hot springs and on the surrounding Big Horn Basin, where ranchers and newly arrived farmers were putting irrigation water onto dry land. The springs had been set aside as a public reserve in the 1890s, and by 1914 visitors came to soak in the warm pools and bathhouses, which made the spa the town's main draw. Its name comes from the Greek for "hot city," a label that suited a place where the water, not the soil or the mines, shaped daily life. This view of the bathhouse grounds shows the resort as residents and summer visitors knew it, a health destination in a basin still filling with settlers.
