Hot Springs, in Bath County, Virginia, was a mountain spa town in 1903, known for its warm mineral springs that had drawn visitors for well over a century. By then the Homestead, the resort hotel at the town's center, was a fixture of the Gilded Age, and its guests came mainly from Washington, Philadelphia, and New York. Railroad service, closely tied to the Chesapeake and Ohio line that ran through the Allegheny Mountains, brought summer and fall visitors up the valley in numbers the town's hotels were built to hold. Life there followed the resort calendar: mineral baths, long dinners, dances, carriage rides, and the leisure of a season that ended when the weather turned. For the local people who worked the kitchens, stables, and laundries, the hotel was the economic center of the valley.
