Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia, 1921. The hillside across the Potomac from Washington had been the Custis and Lee family estate until Union forces took it during the Civil War and began burying their dead there in 1864. By 1921 the grounds held men from several wars and were filling quickly with the First World War dead. That autumn the country prepared to lay an unidentified American soldier to rest on the bluff above the river, a man chosen in France and brought home for a ceremony on Armistice Day, November 11, 1921, which President Warren G. Harding attended. The slope was then known both as a burial ground and as the setting of the old Arlington House, which still stood above the graves.
