Cheyenne, Wyoming, in 1910 was the state capital and a Union Pacific railroad town of roughly 11,000 people, with its economy built on cattle ranching, wool, and the rail yards. The Frontier Days celebration, held each summer since 1897, drew ranchers, cowboys, and visitors from across the high plains to see riding contests, bronc busting, and a street parade. For a town that still measured itself against its cattle-trail past, the festival was a way to show outsiders a settled, prosperous city while honoring the working life of the range. The annual event also helped bring visitors and money into local hotels and shops during the summer season.
