Fort McKenzie stood near Sheridan, in north-central Wyoming, where the Bighorn Mountains rise above ranch country and the Burlington railroad had brought the town into regular contact with markets to the east. In 1909, the cattle and sheep ranches around Sheridan supplied much of the local trade, and coal mining in the surrounding region was an important source of work. The post's infantry battalion was a steady presence in the town, bringing soldiers, their families, and regular commerce to local merchants. Residents of Sheridan knew the fort as a neighbor whose drills, parades, and garrison life shaped the rhythm of the valley, and as a reminder that the frontier wars of the previous generation had given way to a quieter, more settled army presence.
