In 1902, the Teton Range rose above Jackson Hole, a remote valley of Wyoming still reached mainly by wagon and stagecoach over Teton Pass. Ranching and homesteading were the main livelihoods, and the valley's cattle and hay operations depended on the Snake River and its tributaries. Visitors were few, but climbers had been reaching the summit of the Grand Teton since the first recorded ascent in 1898, and a small dude-ranch trade was beginning to bring hunters and sightseers from the East. Wyoming had been a state for only about twelve years, and the land that later became Teton County was still part of Lincoln County. For most people living in the valley, the mountains were simply the wall of the world, shaping weather, travel, and the seasons of work.
