The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone in 1908 was one of the main attractions of Yellowstone National Park, the first national park in the country, set aside in 1872 and still run by Army troops in the years before the National Park Service was created in 1916. Most visitors reached the park by rail to Gardiner, Montana, at the north entrance, then rode stagecoaches over the road south toward the canyon and the Lower Falls, which drop roughly 308 feet. Hotels and tent camps near the rim catered to tourists who came for the scenery, the geysers, and the wildlife, and the canyon's yellow and rust-colored walls were already widely reproduced on postcards and in souvenir views. For the people of northwest Wyoming, the park was both a source of visitors and a point of pride, though its management was still debated in Washington.
