In 1955, Moscow State University stood on the Lenin Hills above the Moskva as the Soviet Union was starting to loosen after Stalin's death two years earlier. That spring, Soviet leaders signed the Warsaw Treaty in May, binding the Soviet Union to its eastern European allies in a new military alliance. Later that summer, the Geneva summit brought Eisenhower, Eden, Faure, Bulganin and Khrushchev together to discuss relations between East and West. For Muscovites, the campus was a place where students were trained for careers in a country that was rebuilding its cities, industry and ties with the wider world.
