Moscow State University, on the Sparrow Hills (Lenin Hills) overlooking the Moskva River, was in 1955 still a young giant of Stalinist architecture. Its main building, designed by Lev Rudnev and finished in 1953, had been raised as one of the seven "Stalin skyscrapers" ringing the Soviet capital, and its central spire towered over the southwestern edge of the city. The university had moved to this site after the Second World War, and by the mid-1950s it housed thousands of students in science and humanities faculties. For Muscovites, the building stood as a symbol of the postwar state's ambition to make Soviet learning visible on the skyline.
