The American Falls, the smaller of the two cataracts that make up Niagara Falls, is the subject here, shown from the New York side of the Niagara River. This glass-plate negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that between about 1890 and 1920 sent photographers across the country and produced many views of scenic and tourist sites. Its catalog numbering, handwritten mark, and the 14 by 11 inch plate size point to the dry-plate work of that period. Niagara was among the most photographed places in North America, and images like this one helped turn the falls into a destination for travelers and a symbol of the continent's natural wonders.
