This engraving shows the landing on the American side of the Niagara River, where the piers and wharves served the boats that carried visitors close to the falls. It was made from a painting by William Henry Bartlett, a British artist who toured North America in the 1830s and sketched its scenery for illustrated books. Engraved by J.C. Bentley and published in London in 1838 by George Virtue, the print offered armchair travelers a view of a working waterfront beside one of the continent's most famous natural wonders. Its focus on the everyday landing, rather than the cataract alone, gives it a useful record of how tourism was organized there.
