Taken from the Canadian shore, this view looks across the Niagara River to American Falls, the smaller of the two cataracts that make up Niagara Falls. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1905 and 1920, when the company sold large numbers of views of American landmarks to travelers who arrived by rail. Its photographs were printed as postcards and commercial views, and this negative came to the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado. Pictures like this show how thoroughly the falls had become a destination for visitors in the early twentieth century.
