Prospect Point, on the American side of the Niagara River, gives this view of the falls a close, direct angle on the cascade that tumbles toward the Canadian shore across the gorge. The negative is one of the glass plates made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely between about 1900 and 1920 producing views for postcards, guidebooks and tourist albums. Niagara was among the company's most popular subjects, since the falls drew steady crowds of visitors by rail and steamer during those decades. The 8 x 10 inch format, larger than the small plates used by many amateurs, reflects the commercial care that went into records like this one.
