Prospect Point, on the American side of the Niagara River, gives this view across the gorge toward the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side, with the rushing water and mist that make the site so recognizable. The negative is one of the glass plates made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed scenic places across the United States and Canada in the early twentieth century and sold the images as postcards and prints. Between 1905 and 1920 Niagara Falls was a major tourist destination, reached by rail and trolley, and the company's catalog of the site reflected that popularity.
