Prospect Point sits on the American side of the Niagara River, giving this view a close look at the cascade where the water drops toward the gorge. The picture survives as a copy of a Detroit Publishing Company photograph, one of the many views the firm produced of American scenic sites for sale to tourists and travel publishers in the early twentieth century. Its glass negative dates from roughly 1910 to 1930, a period when Niagara drew steady crowds by rail and automobile and when the falls were already a familiar symbol of American natural wonder. The falls' power was partly harnessed for hydroelectric generation during these years, so the scene records a landmark at a time of rapid change.
