Terrapin Point is a rocky overlook on Goat Island that juts out toward the brink of the Horseshoe Falls, so this view places the viewer almost level with the cataract's curve rather than looking at it from the shore. The negative is an 8 by 10 inch glass plate from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sold views of American and Canadian scenic sites to tourists and publishers in the early 1900s. Dated between 1905 and 1915, it comes from a period when Niagara Falls drew large crowds of visitors and was becoming one of the most photographed natural landmarks in North America. The plate later passed to the State Historical Society of Colorado and reached the Library of Congress, which holds the company's collection.
