The bridge crosses over to Willow Island, a small island in the Niagara River above the falls, where the water was diverted into power canals to drive mills and factories. Those canals made the upper river a working landscape as well as a tourist destination by the early 1900s. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative was made around 1908 by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely and sold views of American scenery to a national market. The plate's catalog notes suggest it was later donated to the State Historical Society of Colorado, and the image shows how footbridges linked the islands to the mainland.
