Tourists climb a wooden stairway on a rocky bank as they look down the river from Goat Island, a spot that drew sightseers to the rapids below the American Falls. The view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns, resorts and scenery between the 1890s and the 1920s, and the glass plate negative dates from roughly 1900 to 1915. In those years Niagara Falls was one of the country's most popular destinations, and staircases and walkways down into the gorge let visitors get close to the water. The picture shows how that tourism shaped the way people experienced the landscape.
