Willow Island and the canal that bears its name sit on the New York side of the Niagara River, where the water was harnessed for industry. Canals like this one carried river water to mills and, later, to power plants that grew up around the falls in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company made this large glass negative sometime between 1905 and 1920 for its catalog of American views, which sold as postcards and albums. The plate later passed through a Colorado historical society before reaching the Library of Congress, and it preserves how this working waterway looked before later development.
