Rather than the falls, this view turns to Fort George Island, an island near the mouth of the St. Johns River in northeast Florida, and to the oaks that give the print its title. George Barker, who worked from Niagara Falls, New York, was best known for scenic views of the falls and sold his photographs widely to travelers and collectors. Made around 1886, the print reflects a period when northern visitors were increasingly drawn to Florida's landscapes, and its live oaks, often hung with Spanish moss, are a reminder of how the state's scenery was pictured for audiences far from it.
