Shell mounds on Fort George Island, near the mouth of the St. Johns River on Florida's northeast coast, are the subject here, a long way from the Niagara cataracts this board is named for. The heaps were built up over generations by earlier Native peoples who discarded oyster, clam and other shells after meals, and such middens can rise into long, low ridges that last for centuries. Photographer George Barker, working in Niagara Falls, New York, issued this stereo card around 1886, when parlor audiences bought such views to see distant places in three dimensions through a stereoscope.
