Dated 1814 in its title, this print places a military subject at Niagara Falls, Ontario, during the War of 1812. That summer the Niagara frontier was one of the most contested stretches of the border, and the falls and their nearby crossings mattered to both British and American forces. Fighting at Chippawa and Lundy's Lane, a short distance from the falls, drew troops and attention to the gorge and its approaches. Worth noticing is how the cataract, already famous to travelers, sits in the background of a conflict that was testing the border between the two countries.
