This view shows an ice bridge spanning the frozen Niagara River, with the American Falls visible in the distance. Each winter, the river below the falls sometimes froze solid enough to carry foot traffic, and visitors crossed these temporary spans to get closer to the cliffs and the rapids. George Barker, a Buffalo photographer, made many views of the falls for sale to tourists, and his name on the print suggests it was made as a souvenir of that trade. The date of about 1883 comes from an unverified caption card, so it is best treated as approximate.
