Chinese visitors and others stand on a small footbridge with a tower rising behind them, a detail that sets this view apart from the many stereographs that show only the falls. The card was issued by C. Bierstadt, a Niagara Falls studio that sold views like this to tourists in large numbers during the later 1800s. Stereo cards were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which merged two slightly offset photographs into one image with a sense of depth. The catalog's subject headings note Chinese social life at the falls, a reminder that visitors from many places came to see the cataract in the decades after 1850.
