Unlike the many views of the falls themselves, this card shows a castle-like structure built from ice in winter, when spray froze on rocks and railings near the cataract. Stereographs like this one, issued in pairs for viewing through a stereoscope, let late nineteenth-century households tour distant sights from their parlors. The card was published by E. & H.T. Anthony, a leading New York firm in the stereograph trade, and the seasonal ice creation drew visitors until warmer weather melted it away.
