Winter is the detail that sets this stereograph apart from the many summer views of Niagara Falls in the same gallery. Its title, "A Fairy-land of ice and snow," points to the frozen spray and ice formations that built up along the cliffs and rapids when the river froze in cold seasons. Issued by the American Stereoscopic Company around 1903 and copyrighted that year by R. Y. Young, it was made to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a three-dimensional depth that flat photographs lacked. Cards like this were popular in parlors of the early 1900s, when people paid to see distant landmarks from home.
