Niagara Falls is shown here as a hand-colored lithograph, a form that was popular for scenic views in the nineteenth century, when the falls drew steady streams of travelers from Europe and across North America. Lithographs like this were often sold as souvenirs or bound into travel books, and the hand coloring, typically applied by a colorist after printing, gave the cascading water and surrounding rock a painterly warmth that a plain black print could not match. The printed title anchors the scene to its famous subject, and the falls themselves, straddling the border between New York and Ontario, remain one of the most recognizable natural landmarks in the country.
