This view looks out from the bridge that carries visitors across the upper rapids to Goat Island, the wooded island that separates the American Falls from the Horseshoe Falls on the New York side of the Niagara River. The glass negative dates from roughly 1890 to 1910, when Niagara was among the most visited sights in North America and the Detroit Publishing Company was producing large numbers of views for tourists. Its record shows the image came to the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado. The white water of the rapids is the detail worth studying, since it shows the river's speed before it drops over the cliffs.
