Ruined slave cabins on Fort George Island, off Florida's northeast coast, are the subject of this stereo card, which sets it apart from the scenic views around it. Enslaved laborers lived in such cabins while the island's cotton plantations depended on their work, until emancipation in 1865. George Barker, a photographer based in Niagara Falls, New York, issued the card in 1886 as part of his Gems of American Scenery series, and its copyright notice dates it to that year. Its place in a series of scenic views gives it an unexpected role, as it records a site of slavery's daily life at a time when such places were seldom pictured.
