Draped Spanish moss and a shaded park path set this view of St. Davids Park in Green Cove Springs, a small town on the St. Johns River in north Florida that drew visitors for its mineral springs. The print was made around 1886 by George Barker, a photographer based in Niagara Falls, New York, whose firm sold views of scenic and resort destinations to a national market. That a Niagara studio recorded a Florida park reflects how far the post-Civil War tourist trade had spread, and how Victorian buyers wanted pictures of warm-weather places they might never see. The copyright notation on the record shows the image was registered for sale, a common step for commercial views of the period.
