Rather than a straightforward landscape, this piece is a merchant's label: a view of Niagara Falls printed to sell Oldridge's Balm of Columbia, a hair preparation promoted in the 1830s. Printers often borrowed well-known scenery to make a product stand out, and by the late 1830s the Falls had become one of the most recognizable sights in North America, drawing tourists from the United States and Europe. The image shows how commercial printing and popular travel imagery overlapped in this period. The label was copyrighted by Lucius S. Comstock, so the design was protected as a piece of published work.
